HYMN TO HER 12″ VINYL RELEASE

Thanks to Caecilie DiaZolena………………… Photography: Simon Lewis

Paul McMahon has just released a 12″ vinyl record. HYMN TO HER is his tantric exploration of eros, spirit and life force energy. The beautiful sounds of Paul’s voice and guitar were captured by Dave Cook (B-52s, Elvis Costello, Charles Mingus, Natalie Merchant) in an extensive project on one inch 4 track tape which yielded seven of the songs. The other two -You’re My Guts (Ferenz Kallos -producer) and Beat the Bushes (Alejo! -producer) first appeared on MUSIC FOR CHANGING TIMES, the out of print sampler from WoodstockMusicWorks.

McMahon’s songs are deep, beautiful and penetrating. They have the power to heal and to change lives. Someone actually named a child after one. But mostly they just give you the license to chill. Love and awareness. His songs generally conform to generic genres. Sometimes intellectual, sometimes surreal he pushes the mental envelope in ways that are fun to ride within a musical flow. A mystical thinker grappling with the nature of being, his writing traces the changing face of reality, which is alive.
A multisplendored fountain of colored liquid light, Paul is a veteran of the No Wave punk scene, where he was in Daily Life with Glenn Branca and A Band with Wharton Tiers. He saw Pete Seeger at age 12 and grew up in jug, blues and rock bands. He got some lessons from Elvin Bishop and was a blues guitarist until he realized he wasn’t black. Unable to write jokes for an art performance in 1977, he started writing songs instead. Since then more than a hundred have aggregated, most appearing on the ten albums released since 1986. His favorite career achievement has been sharing the bill with Michael Hurley three times…so far. And he was the first person to book the Knitting Factory. He currently operates the Mothership, an everything center and BnB in Woodstock.

QUOTES:

…the genre-bending Woodstock-based songwriter is a bad**s m**********r. You’ll catch whiffs of rural blues, Dylan-esque long-form narrative, deft fingerstyle folk, garage rock, chant, crooner pop, punk, maybe even some madrigal, all of it fully digested and now apparent only as traces in an original, mature voice….McMahon is his own poly-genre.. someone for whom music is a spiritual pursuit, not so much in his content as in his poised trust in the ongoing good will and bottomless resources of the muse.

Paul is easily the most non-derivative artist in existence -refusing to pander to commercial dictates, good taste or even BAD taste, he is at home with bullies as well as children, of all sexes, in all functions and is on the correct side of not being annoying in the midst of any of it.

“Paul is the troubadour king of Woodstock, N.Y.,” (Linda Mary) Montano told me in an interview … “Highly honored, highly respected. Seen as one of the true practitioners of all that’s correct about life and art.”

Paul McMahon is a brilliant example of listening to an inner voice and having the courage to express it.

Haunted by clarity, his voice carries the seed sound.

Paul’s musical wizardry combines insights worthy of Dylan with the vocal charm of Willie Nelson and the eclecticism of the Beatles. Paul has written some of the most beautiful love songs of our times and he can sing them with tenderness, passion and humor. He is simply one of my favorite singers and songwriters and performers alive today. Without Paul McMahon’s songs in my life the world would really be a dark and difficult place.

by Sparrow     My friend Charlie comes up from New Jersey to visit me every summer, and we go on a music tour of Ulster County. Last Friday we saw Paul McMahon play at the Rosendale Café. His tickling puns, leaps of faith, double entendres, visionary cries, self-deprecating asides, avowals of love — plus fine fingerpicking — spun the late-night crowd. http://www.groundreport.com/Business/Woodstock-Rosendale-Last-Weekend/2940413

The ROCK’N'ROLL THERAPIST makes up songs about problems audience members are having. So far they have all been successfully treated, so don’t give him a problem you don’t want to lose.

Paul McMahon is a veteran of the NY No Wave art punk scene; DAILY LIFE with GLENN BRANCA and later his own bands, A BAND and PAUL McMAHON AND THE BLUEBIRDS.

Before that he took guitar lessons from ELVIN BISHOP and played blues, believing himself to be black until age 20. Quit music, started conceptual art. In 1977 he heard JONATHAN RICHMAN and has been writing songs and performing ever since through thick and thin and mostly in Woodstock for the past twenty years. His voice is improving with age. HYMN TO HER is his 10th album.
